A HEALTHY SMILE IS A BEAUTIFUL SMILE
Not only is a nice smile beautiful, it also promotes good health:
Orthodontics (from the Greek orthos "straight" or "proper" and odous "tooth") is a branch of dentistry that is concerned with improving a patient's bite, tooth function and aesthetics by some or all of the following: teeth straightening, growth modification and surgery.
A bite that does not meet properly (a malocclusion) can be inherited or acquired. Some causes of malocclusion include missing, extra or crowded teeth, and misaligned jaws. Accidents or developmental issues such as finger or thumb sucking over an extended period of time may cause malocclusions.
Dental braces (orthodontic braces or simply braces) are used to help align and straighten teeth. Braces put gentle pressure on teeth to eventually place them in the right position. Braces can be used to correct improper bites, underbites, overbites, crooked teeth and various other flaws of the teeth and jaw. Some orthodontic problems should be treated before all the adult teeth grow. Generally, the ideal time to receive orthodontic treatment is at pre-adolescence as it is easier to redirect bone growth. If not, surgery may become necessary to correct the problem. It is recommended that an orthodontic screening be done before the age of seven to help the dentist intercept orthodontic problems as they develop.
Older adults can also benefit from orthodontic treatment to realign teeth that are crowded, crooked or prominent. In cases of teeth that "tip over" or shift due to tooth loss or removal, braces can be used to return teeth to their natural position, and a tooth can be implanted in place of the lost one.
Orthodontic treatment can also restore a proper bite in cases of misaligned teeth due to wearing, thus restoring the pleasure of eating and eliminating muscle tension and pain while chewing. Moreover, treatment to correct the original problem is often less costly than the dental care required to treat more serious problems that can develop in later years.
WHY SHOULD I GET BRACES?
Our smiles are a big part of our identity and we live in an image-conscious society where impressions are made within a few seconds. Straightening your teeth can make a difference. Compared to some of the other 'extreme' cosmetic procedures available today, improving your smile is one of the most valuable investments you can make to improve your overall appearance for a lifetime. You can smile with confidence!
Moreover, according to the American Association of Orthodontists, crooked and crowded teeth are hard to clean and maintain. This may contribute to conditions that cause not only tooth decay but also eventual gum disease and tooth loss.
As we have seen, when left untreated, many orthodontic problems become worse, contributing to abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, inefficient chewing function, excessive stress on gum tissue and the bone that supports the teeth, or misalignment of the jaw joints, which can result in chronic headaches or pain in the face or neck. The use of orthodontic braces as a treatment option is often less costly than the additional dental care required to treat more serious problems that can develop in later years.
